Port Day in Cozumel
A port day in Cozumel, Mexico, starring the hand-painted "Fire It In There" hat.
Every port day needs the right hat. In Cozumel it was the flame-painted "Fire It In There" design.
Planning a Cozumel port day
Cozumel is the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean, about 45 minutes by passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen. Cruise ships dock at three terminals: Punta Langosta, right in town, and Puerta Maya and the International Pier (SSA Cozumel) to the south. Your pier depends on your ship, so check the daily planner the night before.
San Miguel is the island's only town and its center for shopping and dining. The local currency is the Mexican peso.
Things to do in Cozumel
- Snorkel or dive the reefs. The island has around 40 dive sites.
- Spend the day at a beach club. Jill's pick is Paradise Beach on the southwest coast.
- Visit Chankanaab or Punta Sur, two of the island's best-known parks.
- See San Gervasio, the main Maya city on Cozumel, settled around 300 CE and about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from downtown. Check that the site is open before you go.
- Stop for coffee at COZ Coffee Roasting Company and lunch at Cafe Boutique Soledad Hernandez in town.
